Air filters are the first step to tuning any engine. The principle is simple, the more air you get in the engine, the more power you get out. Ok, so there is obviously more to it than that, but bolting on an induction kit can increase your cars power from 1-2bhp, up to 15bhp (rolling road proven!!) With modern ECU's you don't have to re-map or tune the engine, just bolt the kit on! Even a replacement element alone can add a couple of horses, and you never have to replace it, so they quickly pay for themselves. For the maximum power, you can go for a K&N typhoon kit, or an enclosed intake system like the BMC CDA kits maximising cold air intake.

Performance exhausts are a great way to improve the power, and sound of your car! Free flowing exhausts get the gases out of the engine quicker, and help improve power and acceleration, especially at higher revs.

Electric pumps are more efficient than traditional mechanical water pumps in terms of the power they consume, and they can also match an engine’s cooling needs much more effectively. A mechanical pump is always a compromise; belt or camshaft driven, its pumping rate varies directly with engine speed. At tickover in traffic jams it will barely pump sufficient water around the system, and at high revs it will be trying to pump too much, leading to wasted power and the risk of cavitation (disrupted flow caused by the pump trying to shift more coolant than the waterways, hoses etc will take).
The latest car designs are using electrical water pumps, as their reliability, availability and superior performance become understood.
