Air filters are the first step to tuning any engine. The principle is simple, the more air you get in the engine, the more power you get out. Ok, so there is obviously more to it than that, but bolting on an induction kit can increase your cars power from 1-2bhp, up to 15bhp (rolling road proven!!) With modern ECU's you don't have to re-map or tune the engine, just bolt the kit on! Even a replacement element alone can add a couple of horses, and you never have to replace it, so they quickly pay for themselves. For the maximum power, you can go for a K&N typhoon kit, or an enclosed intake system like the BMC CDA kits maximising cold air intake.

Performance exhausts are a great way to improve the power, and sound of your car! Even with just a sports exhaust back box, your car can sound like it means business and have a noticeable improvement in power. For the maximum power increase though, a full exhaust system is the way forward. Sports cat, or de-cat pipe (not road legal) and tubular manifold give further power gains. Free flowing exhausts get the gases out of the engine quicker, and help improve power and acceleration, especially at higher revs.
Upgrading your brakes is vital if you have increased your cars power! It is all very well accelerating like an Aston Martin, but if you stop like a shopping trolley, you are going to be in trouble. If you are increasing your vehicles power, then you will inevitably put more stress on the clutch and transmission, which is when you require an uprated clutch. Often the same model of vehicle will be fitted with either a vented or a solid brake disc. As these discs are significantly different in thickness, it is not possible to interchange them, so you may need to identify if your vehicle has solid or vented discs fitted
These two types of discs are easy to tell apart if you look at them from the side. If you have alloy wheels with reasonable space between the spokes you will probably be able to tell if your brake discs are solid or vented without even taking the wheel off.
Vented brakes discs (not to be confused with drilled or perforated brake discs) are like two flat discs put together, one on top of the other, with gaps between to allow air flow. This helps the discs stay cool, improves braking and extends the life of the discs.
