Air filters are the first step to tuning any engine. The principle is simple, the more air you get in the engine, the more power you get out. Ok, so there is obviously more to it than that, but bolting on an induction kit can increase your cars power from 1-2bhp, up to 15bhp (rolling road proven!!) With modern ECU's you don't have to re-map or tune the engine, just bolt the kit on! Even a replacement element alone can add a couple of horses, and you never have to replace it, so they quickly pay for themselves. For the maximum power, you can go for a K&N typhoon kit, or an enclosed intake system like the BMC CDA kits maximising cold air intake.

Performance exhausts are a great way to improve the power, and sound of your car! Even with just a sports exhaust back box, your car can sound like it means business and have a noticeable improvement in power. For the maximum power increase though, a full exhaust system is the way forward. Sports cat, or de-cat pipe (not road legal) and tubular manifold give further power gains. Free flowing exhausts get the gases out of the engine quicker, and help improve power and acceleration, especially at higher revs.

Why would I want to fit a "performance" air filter? What's the point?
There are various options when it comes to K&N filters so the choice of product depends on what you want from your car. The bottom line is, a K&N performance air filter:
So what are my options?
K&N's replacement elements are a direct replacement for your OEM air filter. Unlike OEM air filters which are made from usually paper, K&Ns filters are made from a free flowing cotton gauze which allows more air into the engine. You are still restricted by the OEM air box, and the limitations of the flat air filter design, so the gains are going to be small, but they are usually noticeable. However, due to the fact that you can wash (washing is only required every 10'000 miles) and reuse the filter, along with K&N's 1 million mile warranty, chances are you will never have to replace the filter again. It will pay for itself after just a couple of services.
The K&N 57i Induction kit is a bolt on kit that replaces the factory fitted air box. By removing the restrictive air box and panel filter and replacing it with the larger K&N free flowing cotton gauze cone filter, you will experience a noticeable increase in power straight away. You will also get a distinct induction roar on full throttle which sounds great.
Each kit it designed specifically for each vehicle to ensure a perfect fit, and provide power increases throughout the rev range.

The K&N Typhoon kit is the next step in performance air filters. Built for performance and show, the Typhoon Air Intake System utilises a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminium tube induction system designed to fit many sport compact performance vehicles. Each kit is proven on a rolling road to increase the vehicles power and torque.
Typhoon kits come either in short ram intake or cold air intake. Both are designed to locate the air filter in an optimum position for maximising the intake of cold air. The colder the air going into the engine, the more power the engine will produce.
Available in a choice of colours, the K&N Typhoon kits look great, sound fantastic, and can produce over 10bhp increase in power depending on the vehicle. If great power increases with a serious induction roar is what you are after, then the Typhoon kit is the induction kit for you.
The new K&N Apollo Cold Air Induction Systems incorporate a washable/reusable K&N High-Flow Air Filter within a protective shell. This shell reduces heat build-up and feeds cool air into your engine, resulting in more cold air for increased power gains. Unlike the Typhoon kits which the Apollo kit does not take air from around the filter which can be hot, the intake pipe is connected to the filter casing so that only cold air from outside of the hot engine bay is used. The colder the air, the more power the engine produces.
Apollo Cold Air Induction Systems overcome the problems of heat soak which can often be associated with open induction kits.
Because of the enclosed design of the Apollo kit, they do not tend to give an induction noise as loud as the Typhoon kits, but they do give excellent power increases.
